Mali: Locals hear shooting from homes, says opposition

Rebel troops in Mali have said they have ended the rule of President Amadou Toumani Toure, and suspended the constitution.

The announcement came after international appeals for calm following an outbreak of violent unrest in the country.

Opposition politician Cheick Oumar Sissoko said what began as a mutiny in Mali is now ''a coup d'etat'', and described the situation for local people.
