Mali mission unavoidable, says President Hollande

French President Francois Hollande has said his decision to send his country's troops into Mali was 'unavoidable'.

French troops are expected to be in direct combat with Islamist rebels in Mali "within hours".

France has been carrying out air strikes since last Friday on the militants' positions, to try to stop them advancing their control of parts of the country.
