Nelson Mandela 'making further progress' in hospital

South African presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj has said former President Nelson Mandela is ''making further progress'' as he is treated in hospital for pneumonia.

Churches across the country held prayers for 94-year-old Mr Mandela, who is also widely known by his clan name, Madiba.

He served as South Africa's first black president from 1994 to 1999, and is regarded by many as the father of the nation for leading the struggle against apartheid.
