Zanzibari singer Bi Kidude 'followed her own spirit'

One of Tanzania's most famous voices, Zanzibar's queen of Taraab and Unyango music Bi Kidude, has died.

The singer, whose real name was Fatma binti Baraka, was thought to be more than 100 years old but her date of birth is unknown. She began her singing career in the 1920s and went on to gain international recognition for her music.

London-based DJ Rita Ray made a documentary about her, called As Old As My Tongue, and knew her well. She was with Bi Kidude two months ago during the Sauti za Busara festival in Zanzibar.

BBC Africa's Paul Bakibinga asked her why Bi Kidude was so important.
