Nelson Mandela obituary: From birth to prison release

South Africans are mourning their former leader, Nelson Mandela, who died on Thursday aged 95.

Mr Mandela spent 27 years in jail during his battle against apartheid, before becoming South Africa's first black president in 1994.

In the first part of an obituary for BBC Newsnight, Robin Denselow recalls Nelson Mandela's life from his birth in 1918 to his prison release in 1990.
