Female Genital Mutilation is "child abuse and gender based violence"
The head of the United Nations Population Fund, Babatunde Osotimehin, has described female genital mutilation as child abuse.
It's the first time the UN has used that description - normally referring to the practice as a human rights violation. In an interview with the BBC, Mr Osotimehin said the custom should stop.
