US ends ban on New Zealand naval ship visits
The US Defence Secretary, Leon Panetta, has heralded a "new era" in military relations with New Zealand, following the lifting of a 26-year old naval ban.
The relationship between the two countries soured during the Cold War and in 1986, New Zealand put a ban on US nuclear-armed or nuclear-powered ships entering its ports.
Washington responded by preventing New Zealand ships from visiting American ports or bases.
Duncan Kennedy reports.
