Hong Kong promised universal suffrage by 2017

Hong Kong's chief executive has promised universal suffrage there by the year 2017.

CY Leung made the commitment at a morning reception on the 16th anniversary of the city's return to the mainland.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets to demand democratic reforms.
