Should planes be tracked in real time?

The search for AirAsia flight QZ8501 comes just 10 months after Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 disappeared from radar screens.

In both cases, the crash sites of the planes have been difficult to locate, and questions have been raised about whether we should be able to track airliners in real time.

Naga Munchetty explains how the radar system works.
