Vanuatu cyclone: Clean-up operation under way

Military planes from Australia and New Zealand are flying emergency supplies into Vanuatu.

Tens of thousands of people are now living in temporary shelters. A communications blackout means little is known about conditions beyond the capital, Port Vila.

But the first reports from the outer islands of Vanuatu are trickling in - and paint a picture of utter devastation.

In Port Vila, where seas were reported to have surged as high as eight metres (26ft) and much of the housing has either been destroyed or severely damaged, a clean-up is under way.

Elaine Jung reports.
