India food security bill faces challenges

This week the Indian government will unveil further details of its proposals to subsidise food for two thirds of the population, some 800 million people.

The Food Security Bill is expected to receive a further $1.5bn in funding, which the government hopes will enable it to provide cheap grain rations for all who need them.

But production is an issue, with many farmers put off growing food grains by low profit margins, and others leaving agriculture entirely for more secure money in office work.

Supriya Menon reports from the southern state of Kerala.
