Australia and Japan strengthen defence ties

Australia's Defence Minister David Johnston has met his Japanese counterpart, Akinori Eto, in Tokyo on a visit aimed to strengthen defence ties between the two countries.

The two men discussed bilateral co-operation, including in the area of defence equipment, as Australia aims to replace its ageing submarines.

This is the first meeting between Mr Johnston and Mr Eto, who took office last month.

"We are great commercial friends... I think we can be even better military friends," Mr Johnston said.
