Sydney siege suspect named as Iranian Man Haron Monis

The gunman who held dozens of people hostage in a Sydney cafe has been identified as an Iranian refugee who was on bail facing a number of charges.

Man Haron Monis, who was granted political asylum in Australia, was described by his former lawyer as an isolated figure.

Footage from Australian TV programmes show he has appeared several times on media outlets.

Dr Sajjan Gohel, International Security Director at the Asia Pacific Foundation told the BBC: "Now his origins have been revealed it may provide more light on his motivations."
