Micheal Martin resigns as Ireland's foreign minister

The embattled Irish Prime Minister, Brian Cowen, has won a vote of confidence on his leadership.

Prior to the vote Foreign Minister Micheal Martin turned against Mr Cowen saying he believed Fianna Fail now needed a new leader. Mr Martin has now announced he has resigned.

He told a press conference he had been "clear I would insist on my resignation if my views did not prevail in the vote. I have therefore tendered my resignation as minister for foreign affairs".

The secret ballot among Fianna Fail MPs was called after criticism of Mr Cowen's handling of the country's economic crisis.
