Protesters clash with police over Alps rail tunnel
Police in the Italian northern Alps have clashed with protesters who were trying to prevent bulldozers from starting work on a new high-speed rail link to France.
The protesters claim the new tunnel through the Alps will ruin the natural beauty of the area.
The Italian government is determined to go ahead with the project which has been heavily backed by EU money and is estimated to cost 15bn euros (£13bn).
Tom Donkin reports.
