Greek debt crisis: Athens police and protesters clash

In Athens, police have been fighting running battles with demonstrators, while the rest of the city takes part in a two-day general strike against government plans to raise taxes and cut public spending.

Masked demonstrators threw petrol bombs at riot police on the eve of a key vote on more spending cuts and tax rises.

With Greece on the brink of bankruptcy, the government has to win the vote to secure an emergency international loan.

Gavin Hewitt reports from Athens.
