German MEP: Merkel phone row is a 'scandal' if true

A German MEP claimed it would be a "scandal" if allegations that US intelligence agencies tapped into the phone of Chancellor Angela Merkel were found to be true.

Elmar Brok, a close personal friend of Mrs Merkel, told BBC Radio 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire: "She is someone who lived in East Germany, where she knew what it is when the state controls the people.

"If they have done it - it's an incredible breach of confidence. How can you talk to people seriously anymore if you know they've looked at your private letters?"
