Pope: Ask Lord to spare Syrians

Pope Francis has used his first Christmas address as pontiff to urge those involved in the Syrian war to allow access to humanitarian aid.

Pope Francis has used his first Christmas address as pontiff to repeat the call for peace in Syria made by his predecessor, Pope Benedict, last year.

Speaking to a packed St Peter's Square, he called for prayers for the Syrian people to be spared further suffering and asked that, "the parties in conflict... guarantee access to humanitarian aid."
