Obama makes $1bn Europe security pledge on Poland trip

US President Barack Obama has said he will ask the US Congress to back a $1bn plan to strengthen the US military presence in eastern Europe.

At a news conference alongside Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, Mr Obama said his proposals would boost US troop deployments and increase military exercises in Europe.

''We will be expanding our exercises and training with allies to increase the readiness of our forces,'' he said.
