Alexander Van der Bellen thanks Austria for 'putting trust in me'

Alexander Van der Bellen has narrowly won Austria's presidential election, denying his sole rival Norbert Hofer the chance of becoming the EU's first far-right head of state.

Mr Van der Bellen thanked voters for putting their trust in him, but also acknowledged Mr Hofer as being in a position of "great responsibility".
