Rio favela residents ride the waves

The Favela Surf Club in Rio de Janeiro aims to help poor children participate in a sport traditionally pursued by wealthier Brazilians.

Surf club instructor Jefferson Cardoso da Silva comes from the shantytown of Cantagalo, like many of the young people that he teaches.

Jefferson spoke to BBC News about why the surf club was started up and gave a tour of the group's workshop.
