Volcano puts Mexico on evacuation alert

The authorities in Mexico are stepping up preparations for an evacuation around the Popocatepetl volcano, in case of a major eruption.

The volcano, near Mexico City, has been spewing glowing rock fragments and ash from more than 60 openings in its crust.

Officials say the alert could remain for weeks or months until the volcano's activity diminished.
