Reports of 'massacre' of indigenous Venezuelan tribe denied

Reports that a massacre of members of the indigenous Yanomami people had recently taken place deep in the Venezuelan jungle have been refuted by government officials after they visited the site of the alleged attack.

The campaign group Survival International asked the government to investigate following reports that illegal gold miners had killed up to 80 people in the remote area of Irotatheri close to the border with Brazil, but visiting officials found no evidence - and the claims were denied by the Yanomami people themselves.
