Protesters take to streets of Syrian capital, Damascus

Anti-government protesters in Damascus, Syria, have rallied at a mosque in the capital.

In amateur footage sent to the BBC, people appeared to chant pro-freedom slogans, including ''remove the blockade off Deraa''.

The city has become the centre of a serious challenge to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Amnesty International fears 55 people have died there in the past week.
