Palestinians win Unesco membership

The UN cultural body Unesco has voted in favour of membership for the Palestinians, a move that bolsters the Palestinian bid for internationally recognised statehood.

The UN Security Council will vote next month on whether to grant the Palestinians full UN membership.

But the result prompted the US to announce it was cutting funding to the organisation, starting with an expected payment of $60m next month.
