UN: Syria violence and torture must end now

The UN Human Rights Council is holding an emergency meeting in Geneva to discuss the situation in Syria.

A report for the UN earlier this week said security forces had committed crimes against humanity in their crackdown on anti-government protests.

The UN's human rights chief, Navi Pillay, warned that Syria could descend into civil war.

She said it was time for the international community to take urgent measures to protect the Syrian people.
