Arab League calls for national unity government in Syria

The Arab League has launched a new political initiative aimed at ending the bloodshed in Syria.

It called for the formation of a national unity government and new elections.

The league urged President Bashar al-Assad to allow his deputy to oversee the transition, which would include the involvement of opposition groups and multi-party elections under a new constitution.

The BBC's Tom Esslemont reports.
