President Barack Obama tours the West Bank

President Obama has told the Palestinians and Israelis that they must restart direct peace talks despite their disagreements.

At a news conference in Ramallah with the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, Mr Obama said Israel's programme of building settlements did not advance the cause of peace but should not be an excuse for doing nothing.

President Obama said the United States remained committed to the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state.
