Syria official says US missile strikes were 'at terrorists' request'

The bombardment of a Syrian air base by the US has helped terrorists and so-called Islamic State, the Syrian deputy foreign minister has said.

Faisal Mekdad told BBC Newsnight that the incident which prompted the air strikes, a suspected Syrian nerve gas attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, had been "fabricated", despite strong evidence to the contrary.
