Kuril islands dispute between Russia and Japan

The Russian president has infuriated Japan by making a visit to remote and disputed islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Dmitry Medvedev has become the first Russian leader to visit the islands, which prevented a peace treaty between Russia and Japan after World War II.

They are known in Russia as the Southern Kurils and in Japan as the Northern Territories.
