2001: Operation Enduring Freedom
On 7 October 2001, the United States began its military campaign, Operation Enduring Freedom, against al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The attacks were quickly followed by a public broadcast from President Bush who promised a "sustained and relentless" campaign.
