US officials: No oil in Gulf of Mexico for four days

No fresh oil has escaped since a cap was activated on a leaking Gulf of Mexico well almost four days ago, the US Coastguard has said.

Earlier the official in charge of the oil clean-up, Thad Allen, expressed concern about a "detected seep" on the sea floor near the well and other "undetermined anomalies", which are now being monitored.

Federal on scene co-ordinator, Coast Guard Admiral Paul Zukunft, said his priority now was to try to stop the oil that had already leaked from reaching shorelines.
