1960: Nixon v Kennedy

Senator John F Kennedy took on Vice-President Richard Nixon in the first televised US presidential debate in 1960.

The cameras favoured Kennedy who looked calm and composed throughout, while Nixon appeared unshaven and flustered.

Senator Kennedy won a narrow victory in that election, and his triumph in the debates was seen as a key element in his success.

Richard Nixon, who ran successfully again for President in 1968 and 1972, refused to take part in any further televised debates.

This video contains edited extracts from one of the debates.
