Barack Obama hails the nuclear arms treaty with Russia

US President Barack Obama said that ratifying the New Start treaty, a nuclear arms treaty meant to reduce American and Russian nuclear arsenals, would help prevent nuclear weapons "from falling into the hands of terrorists".

The treaty, which requires the US and Russia to cut their deployed nuclear warheads by some 30%, was passed in the US Senate by a vote of 71 to 26.
