US defence budget to be cut by $78bn

The US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates has announced plans to cut up to 47,000 troops starting in 2015.

The defence budget is to be slashed by $78bn (£50.3bn) over the next five years.

This is in addition to $100bn worth of efficiencies being re-directed to higher priority programmes.

Mr Gates said it was imperative to make "every defence dollar count".
