US congresswoman critically injured in shooting

A US Congresswoman has been shot in the head in Arizona.

Gabrielle Giffords, who is a Democrat, was meeting members of the public in the Arizona state capital Tucson when the incident happened.

The gunman also opened fire on aides and other people at the event. One child has died and several others have been seriously injured.

They were taken to the University Medical Centre in the city. Dr Peter Rhee later gave an update on the situation.
