US: Syria President Bashar al-Assad has lost legitimacy
The US has imposed sanctions on Syria's largest commercial bank and biggest mobile phone operator, following continued attacks by government forces on opposition activists.
The US Treasury said it was targeting the financial resources of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Speaking on Wednesday, White House spokesperson Jay Carney said it was clear that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had "lost legitimacy".
