Earthquake hits US east coast

An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.9 has struck the eastern coast of the United States, with tremors felt as far apart as Boston and South Carolina.

The quake was centred in the state of Virginia, with the Pentagon and the Capitol Building in neighbouring Washington DC evacuated.
