US community mourns murdered Afghan mayor of Kandahar

On 27 July, Ghulam Haider Hamidi, the Mayor of Kandahar, was killed by a suicide bomber who detonated explosives wrapped inside his turban.

Mr Hamidi was one of a number high-profile Afghan officials assassinated in the last few weeks and his death was a blow to both the Karzai government and the US, with whom he worked closely.

But the Kandahar mayor had another life in Virginia where he fled to after the Soviet Union invaded his country 30 years ago.

A memorial service was held at a community mosque in Annandale last weekend to enable his American friends and family to pay their last respects.

Jane O'Brien reports from Annandale.
