New Yorkers sit out storm at home

Small motor boats have been deployed around New York city ahead of Hurricane Irene's arrival. The National Guard has also taken to the streets of Manhattan.

Thousands of flights have been grounded and the city's public transport system has been shut down.

The BBC's Steve Kingstone said some New Yorkers had decided to sit out the storm at home.
