Irene strands thousands of travellers

In the US, airlines are struggling to clear the backlog of cancelled flights caused by tropical storm Irene after it caused havoc along the US East Coast.

Thousands of travellers, including many Britons, have been stranded by the disruption and some airlines are laying on extra flights to deal with the delayed passengers.
