Gabrielle Giffords: "I will recover and return"

US politician Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head last year, has officially handed in her resignation.

In a speech read out by her friend Debbie Wasserman Schultz, she said she had more work to do on her recovery before she would be able to serve in elected office again.

But she added: "I will recover and will return".

She was attacked by a gunman during a political meeting in Tucson, Arizona on 8 January 2011. Six people died in the incident, including one of her aides.

Suspect Jared Loughner has been declared unfit to stand trial.
