US court rules ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional

A US court has ruled that a ban on same-sex marriages in California is unconstitutional, in the latest stage of a long-running court battle between supporters and opponents of gay marriage.

The case is likely to go to the Supreme Court before a final decision is made.
