Hurricane Sandy 'may' trigger wall of water to hit NYC

High winds from Hurricane Sandy have begun to batter the east coast of the United States.

Around 50 million people are in the path of the storm, which is due to make landfall in New Jersey overnight.

Coastal regions of Virginia, New Jersey and New York are expected to bear the brunt of the impact.
