District of Columbia Police Chief Cathy Lanier has asked people to stay away from the Navy Yard area in Washington after 12 people were killed by a former Navy serviceman.

Washington DC police chief Cathy Lanier has warned people to stay away from the Navy Yard area in Washington after 12 people were killed by a former Navy serviceman.

The gunman has been identified as Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, Texas.

He died in a gun battle with police during the rampage at Washington Navy Yard.

Mrs Lanier said a police officer who had been shot in the legs, was recovering from "serious injuries" in hospital.
