'Nonsense' that Snowden was trained spy

Edward Snowden's claims that he was a trained spy, rather than a low-level analyst, are "silly" and not true, former CIA officer Robert Baer has said.

Mr Baer told the Today programme that he has concerns over Mr Snowden's common sense following his claims that he worked undercover overseas for the CIA and NSA.

He also said that Mr Snowden should go to jail for leaking secret NSA documents.

Were he to be granted a deal with the US that ensured his freedom, he added, it would set a dangerous precedent that could lead to a future "catastrophe".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 29 May.
