Bruce Jenner: why are some people painting their nails?

Bruce Jenner, a US Olympic gold medallist and reality TV personality, recently said he is transgender and identifies as a woman.

On Monday morning, an Australian radio programme started a campaign urging men to paint their nails to show support for Jenner.

Hundreds responded, including many men. Graham McNab tweeted: "Showing my support for anyone who wants to be who they want to be!"

Jenner is the stepfather of reality TV superstars the Kardashian siblings. He won an Olympic gold medal in the decathlon in 1976. Last week, in an interview broadcast on ABC News, he said that he struggled with his new identity so much that at one point he contemplated suicide. He also mentioned that he wanted to "be able to have my nail polish on long enough that it actually chips off" - the line that seems to have inspired the most recent campaign.
