'Offshore fracking can succeed', says former Cuadrilla boss

13 February 2014 Last updated at 12:01 GMT

The founder of shale gas firm Cuadrilla, Dr Chris Cornelius, is planning a venture to frack in the Irish Sea.

Dr Cornelius, whose new firm Nebula Resources was awarded three licences to explore for shale gas, told the BBC's John Moylan he is "quite certain" that large volumes of offshore shale gas could be extracted.

While the project would be the first of its kind, he said "there is no reason" why offshore fracking would not work if the "commercial side" was developed.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 13 February.
