(Open): Leading Wall Street shares rose in early Friday trading as investors welcomed the latest job creation data.

The Dow Jones was up 55.32 points at 16,891.43, the S&P 500 index rose 6.63 points to 1,947.09 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 12.53 points to 4,308.75.

Earlier, the Labor Department said US employers added 217,000 jobs in May.

The US non-farm payroll figure was well below April's revised number of 282,000 jobs, but it was still the fourth month in a row of solid gains.

On the Dow, Goldman Sachs was the biggest riser, adding 1.4%, followed by chipmaker Intel, with gains of 1.2%.

Overall, the top performer was credit card machine maker Verifone, which rose 7.4% after reporting better-than-expected second-quarter results.

The biggest loser was car rental firm Hertz, which sank 9.4% after saying it needed to correct accounting errors in its results dating back to 2011.
