(Close): US stock markets were virtually unchanged at close on Monday, as merger activity outweighed fears about the situation in Iraq.

The Dow Jones was up 5.33 points, or 0.03%, at 16781.07 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 10.45 points, or 0.24%, to 4321.11.

The S&P 500 rose 1.62 points, or 0.08%, to 1937.78.

The medical firm Covidien led the S&P higher, as shares jumped 20%, after it agreed a takeover with Medtronic.

"The M&A absolutely keeps on coming. It's ripe for it with rates so low, all this money on the balance sheet and companies looking to grow their businesses," said Ken Polcari, from O'Neil Securities in New York.

He also said that traders would be keeping a close eye on Iraq.
